Thermal Power & Climate Action 13-14 May 2010

INVITATION

Energy Observer magazine in cooperation with Deloitte Bulgaria and the Bulgarian National Committee in the World Energy Council is pleased to invite you to attend the Energy Forum for SEE ‘Thermal Power and Climate Action’, to take place on 13-14 May 2010 at the Sheraton Sofia Hotel Balkan, Sofia, Bulgaria. The event is also supported by the Bulgarian Ministry of Economy, Energy and Tourism, the Ministry of Environment and Waters, and the Diplomatic Institute at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

In line with the global efforts to tackle efficiently climate changes, the Forum will approach the issues of clean power production and healthier environment from the perspective of thermal power production. With the Copenhagen summit setting the political background for a global agreement on GHG emission cuts, fuel-fired power plants find it more difficult than ever to balance between low-priced power production and increasingly stringent environmental regulations.

The focal point of this forum is to review and analyze the current state of greenhouse emissions from the coal-fired thermal power plants in the countries of South East Europe (SEE) and to look for state-of-the-art technological solutions for achieving the European Union’s goals of reduction of the carbon dioxide and mitigation the effects of coal mining and electricity production to the environment. Can the world do without thermal power? How far away is the ‘clean’ future for coal-fired plants? What will be the carbon costs? These are but a sample of the topics to be discussed at the Thermal Power and Climate Action Forum.

A number of renowned experts and professionals in the thermal power sector and climate change consultants will offer answers to the most urgent questions posed by the transition to low-carbon economy. They will discuss the possibilities for implementation of carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects in SEE, the practical approaches in developing the emissions trading market, the need for improvement of the regulatory framework and cooperation between the states of the region. The participants in the forum will be governmental officials, top managers from the energy sector, experts and scientists from Bulgaria, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, China, FYROM, Greece, Hungary, Japan, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Slovenia, Turkey, and the United States of America. We also expect high-ranking representatives of the European Commission to participate in our networking sessions.

We hope that we will have the pleasure to welcome you as a participant in this event and we look forward to seeing you in Sofia.

Yours sincerely,
