Thermal Power & Climate Action Energy Forum
Conventional thermal power production accounts for over half of the electricity generated in the EU-27 and likely to preserve its major share in the future. The average share of electricity generation from thermal power plants in the region of South-East Europe is substantial – between 40 and 70 percent. Over the past 20 years solid fuels have occupied a stable place as a power generation resource. The lignite coal fields in this part of the continent are enough to secure extraction for the next 50-60 years. As one of the cheapest energy sources, coal will surely continue to dominate power production.
However, time has come for the thermal industry to adjust to a new reality of greater environmental awareness and reduced carbon emissions. The Thermal Power & Climate Action Energy Forum will aim to reconcile increasing demand for new thermal power plants and refurbishment of existing ones to GHG reduction and global environmental commitments.
Topics & Participants
The Forum will give the floor to experts discussing a variety of topics, such as:
- benchmarks for the sector’s future development in the light of the post-Kyoto Protocol and the UN COP 16 Summit in Mexico,
- possibilities for implementation of carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects in SEE, practical approaches in the development of the emissions trading market,
- improvement in the regulatory framework,
- cooperation between the countries of the region.
We have invited some leading companies and research institutes to present their expertise in sustainable thermal power production, among which a significant number of experts in the field from the EU member states, the United States of America, China, Japan and Russia. We also expect high-ranking representatives of the European Commission to participate in our networking sessions.
